All You Need is Love and...Boracay

Photography by MangoRed
It's no secret that I love Boracay weddings. But what I love even more are Rebellious Boracay Brides. No two Bora wedding is alike. Despite the fact that it's pretty much the same island and often times the same rockstar talents, each wedding comes out with a different vibe. But of course there are still certain Boracay weddings that kind of stand out for me--and those are the ones that are perfectly photographed and perfectly executed with simple but significant elements. A Rebellious Boracay Bride is someone who knows how to bring out the best of what the island can offer. After all, the beach is your backdrop, what else is there to do but just add significant touches of your own?

I've seen sooooo many Boracay weddings. So I naturally love the ones that are going against the templates. Take for example Nick & Sheeva's Boracay wedding. Beautiful calligraphy, Asya as their backdrop, emerald jewelry, copper-colored cups, and bicycle as a design element--it's a new kind of Boracay wedding and it worked flawlessly.

So what to me is the best Boracay wedding formula? 1) Invest and work with the best talents. My top 3 would be Amanda Tirol, an amazing photographer, and an equally top caliber videographer. 2) Keep everything else simple and within a reasonable budget. 3) Let go. Have fun. You are in Boracay. Love and Chill.

Congratulations to Nick & Sheeva. May you have an eternally lovely marriage as your wedding.

Lyn & Thyne

Sure it's a lesbian wedding. Let's get that out of the way. And maybe, it's what makes this entry obviously 'rebellious'. But what makes this even more non-traditional for us is the fact that the photos show of ACCEPTANCE from the people around the couple--particularly the officiator and the oldies. That they have gotten passed this and that they have learned to embrace it, witness it, and be part of the celebration. Now that's what makes this rebellious.

You know what? To be honest, this doesn't even seem quite as scandalous to someone like me who studied in an all-girl Catholic school that is secretly popular for having a lot of girl-on-girl action haha (any guesses?). My friends and I were surrounded with this type of relationships on a daily basis back in High School--they were our classmates, they were our own "ka-barkadas", heck--some were even our TEACHERS. Early on we've learned this to be 'normal' and that it was just a matter of preference. It was actually only when I've moved on to College that I've realized there was some sort of real controversy with this kind of love. Some girls moved on, realizing that it was a phase and eventually they've re-discovered their femininity. But then there were also some who realize it's who they are for good.

It's because of exposure early in life that allows us to have an open mind and an open heart. So this is the reason why we opt to feature this rebelliousness in the blog. So that more people can be exposed and learn to be more understanding. Because at the end of the day, it all boils down to love. And LOVE CONQUERS ALL.

"....as I went through the photos while I prepared them for this post, I remember how I felt shooting it – I felt how special it was, I felt how happy I was for them, and I felt the celebration of love all throughout the day – all of these are no different from any other wedding I witness. I didn’t think the entire time that this is a lesbian wedding, that there's actually two women who are vowing to love each other forever. That made me realize all the more that strip this of the issue of gender, including all the prejudice that comes with it, this wedding is as normally wonderful as any other wedding. So I’m not anymore going to go through much trying to justify it – because any union, clear it of the discrimination of gender, much like age and race is a love as pure as any love there is out there. " -- Oly Ruiz of Metrophoto

Throwback Thursdays

Call me sentimental but my favorite Jason Magbanua videos are not necessarily the new ones but those that I've watched when I was still single and 'un-engaged'. There's something about that time in your life when you'd watch during lunch break with officemates, gushing and drooling at his videos then hoping, praying, and dreaming that it would be you someday.

Here's one of my absolute favorites.Incidentally, check out the featured rebel bride here who donned a hot pink gown! To be rebellious in 2008--wow, that's pretty remarkable! Enjoy :)

Jason is a visionary. This video was in 2008--yet this particular style is just being done by others now. And that's what makes him the undisputed, most influential filmmakers in the industry not just locally but globally. So what's your favorite JM video? :)

Faye + Yayo - "Here We Come"

 Here we come

Faye and Yayo have been together for thirteen years...and finally, all roads lead to Boracay last February 15, 2013--my favorite time of the year if you ask me ;) *Wink*

Faye & Yayo's Shangri-La Boracay Wedding had all the makings of a 'RomCom'. It had all the fun details, tied together with a vibe of watercolor paint making it quite nostalgic.

Pulling off a destination beach wedding, whether it's a classy or a whimsical one, to me the very fact that it is a destination wedding makes it quite rebellious on its own. It takes a lot of courage...and it takes a certain kind of boldness knowing that guests may not be comfortable with the idea (and may decide not to go due to budget or time) and that logistics are extra harder than the locally-based wedding.

RB Faye shares:  "Destinations wedding are really hard as we have to communicate with our coordinator and venue through emails alone. It was also really challenging because we had to ship all the DIYs we did to Caticlan. But we were able to pull through everything with the help of our coordinator Amanda Tirol because she really knew how to communicate with us. And of course, with the never ending help from the groom."

Speaking of DIYs, as if having a destination wedding wasn't challenging enough, Faye & Yayo took the notch even higher by creating a lot of DIYs together.

RB Faye shares: "We bought button pin makers from Amazon and made individual button pins for our entourage and suppliers. We also had an air dry clay at home and we molded small frames as size labels for our giveaways". When asked why their logo sticker was that of a cat & dog, Faye shares "We're both animal lovers, Everyone close to us knows that  :) Yayo has 2 dogs and I have 2 dogs and a cat. Having our wedding in Boracay meant we couldn't bring our pets with us so instead, we asked our friend to incorporate them in our logo so that at least they are still part of our wedding."

The couple's had many, many DIYs and creative little touches. But I particularly loved the idea of putting the couple's photos at different ages of their lives as table numbers! I also appreciated the fact that there were a lot of recycled, handcrafted items in the couple's wedding! :)

RB Faye: "We really wanted a destination wedding from the start. We chose Boracay because we really, really love Shangri-la. The day after I got engaged, I knew that the best place to have our wedding was at Shangri-la. We figured that it will also be a great vacation for friends as well. :)"
