All-White Mardi Gras

There's something about Poveda's graduating batch of 2014 that makes you feel like you can expect great, rebellious things from the girls (and perhaps their parents? *wink*). After all, if their prom last year and their ball this year are any indication, then this batch is definitely on to exciting times ahead.

We once presented a mardi gras wedding concept to a client. Alas, the couple didn't pick that concept. So when we found out about Poveda's grad ball theme, we felt quite giddy about it. Gideon Hermosa, Jason Magbanua, Oly Ruiz, Madge Lejano...and for the best dressed, you have Veluz and what more can you expect? I can't wait to see the video.

Congratulations, ladies! We can't wait to see what you'll come up with for your debuts and weddings! And have a blast at college--for this is just the beginning ;)

RTW and Gorgeous

Veluz RTW 2014 Collection
from Jason Magbanua on Vimeo.

When a rebel bride dare say that she is toying with the idea of RTW, you could almost taste the uncomfortable silences, the judgmental eyes, the clearing of the throat, and the wrinkled nose. There's a stigma. And it's become the white elephant in the room. What more when you say RTW+taffeta. Oh the horror.

Enter Veluz. She's always changed the game and she's at it again. There's a reason why she's landed on the now famous Buzz Feed article on the world's most beautiful detailed gowns list. She doesn't just make beautiful gowns. Her signature in every piece is impeccable and apparent. Rebellious in the ORIGINAL, as we said earlier this week. You know her trademark and you know she's got taste. In this 2014 RTW collection, she makes the word RTW something you would want to COVET. And that's saying something. And she's also done the unthinkable. She's made taffeta, gorgeously pretty again. It's the biggest comeback ever. On a more personal note, I was NEVER, EVER a fan of white bridal gowns and every RB reader knows that. But Veluz is probably the only designer that makes me want to wear white. And again, that's saying something ;)

BTS photos courtesy of Nina Cuenca

But having had a first-hand experience of what went on during the latter part of the shoot, what's even more admirable about Veluz is how she could get an amazing pool of artists to collaborate with her with such love, passion, and positivity. It's a testament to not only how she is as a designer, but how she is as a person. Having said that, I'd like to applaud the creative team behind the shoot--most especially to Madge Lejano who was the brainchild of the bridal looks and creative treatments. Everything felt so rebelliously beautiful. Chandeliers hanging on trees, the most unconventional of models, the AHMAZING hair and makeup that is definitely not your usual bridal looks. And the video. So many emotions!

Congrats to Veluz and the rest of the amazing team that worked on the RTW 2014 Collection Launch. Truly world class!

This is only the beginning of the launch. Don't forget to add @veluzbride on Instagram to get updated on the catalogue and creative photos from the entire collection.

Biyahe ni Drew at Iya

There's nothing quite like a
Jason Magbanua x MangoRed
tandem wedding *wink*

And there's nothing quite like the love of Iya and Drew either.

They are literally the living proof that network wars can and need to be defied. That more beauty, creativity, and rebelliousness can come out of a union this amazing.

What a way to start the morning. Jason is at it again. My heart is skipping in so many beats. The prenup...the wedding. Oh that cliff hangin', heart thumpin' ceremony venue!!!

Iya & Drew

Wedding aficionados and showbiz fans are definitely on a stand still as MangoRed, Jason Magbanua, and RabbitHole Creatives have been teasing us with Iya & Drew goodness over the weekend. All roads will definitely lead to MangoRed's website as they've announced that official prenup photos are gonna be up anytime soon. There's early indications that the wedding was quite rebellious--from the rebel bride's fierce Pepsi Herrera gown, to the cliff hanging ceremony, and down to the amazing styling.

PS. I love the reference to Drew's GMA News TV show as MangoRed entitled the teaser prenup: "Biyahe ni Drew & Iya" ;)

Congratulations to the rebel couple of the hour! :)

Tongue Tied

We love the idea of using fresh music for the wedding. It's typical for a prenup or save-the-date but not yet as popular for the actual bridal walk, dance, or the SDE. Someday we hope to receive submissions of  bridal walk videos that uses this kind of music.

Shot and directed by Jason Magbanua (in collaboration with the masterful styling tactics of Madge Lejano in hiding the equipment that captured the live sounds). Concept by my hubb. Enjoy this piece from Kai Honasan.

*On location at the newly renovated Katipunan branch of The Old Spaghetti House (the new & improved look of this branch makes it perfect for a prenup or an anti-reception venue!)

The Full Wedding Film

Cy & Kai - The Full Edit of the Bora Hop Wedding from Kai P. Cruz on Vimeo.

I've never seen a full wedding video, have you? We've fallen in love with the concept of "same day edit" that we've forgotten what a full one must look like. Imagine getting someone like Jason Magbanua, which is such a premium, and yet we've only really just seen the short film versions--and that's how good he is because you give him that full trust, and you are actually more than happy to just receive the 2 to 3-minute highlights of it.

The DVD Menu
So when we received our full video, we didn't have any expectations. At the very least I figured, it would obviously have more clips of the wedding. But I never in a million years would have known that the full edit was actually even better than the short version---if that's even possible to fathom.

Watching this video brought about so many emotions and so many surprises. The DVD also comes with a copy of your vows--which is a great reminder of why you guys married each other.

It comes with a nifty package too, which is a mark of Jason's taste, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. It's a piece of him that's somehow being shared to you, and channeled through your wedding.

If you're still in the planning stage and still can't decide on your videographer--or maybe you cannot justify the cost, this one right here seals the deal I think. With Jason and his team, you are not just getting a documentation of your wedding. It goes beyond that. It's literally a time capsule of your perfect day, beautifully packaged and delightfully preserved so eloquently for you.

XOXO,
Kai

PS. As a rule of thumb, we never dictated to Jason what music to use in our wedding videos--both the short version and the long version. As a couple/client, I would understand the "temptation" to ask your videographer to use the songs that you like. But I would advice you not to. Just because, as they go through your raw materials, they would know better on what would fit the actual material's mood and tone. Music plays a really important role in movies, tv shows, and it's the same principle in the wedding video. Jason was a DJ before he became a rockstar filmaker. And he purchases all-original material from artists across the globe just to be able to give your videos its own flavor. Trust and let go---you won't regret it :)

RB Goes Gatsby Part 3 of 3

"You're worth the whole damn bunch of them."

Determined, passionate, charismatic, lived life to the fullest, and a fine taste in shirts. Qualities of the Great Gatsby. Was there any other choice for this role?

This final feature on our RB goes Gatsby special coincides with the grand reveal of Jason's latest offering. And we wanted to give it its own highlight as well:

Jason writes:

"Years ago, when I was starting out, I asked a lot of questions. Why can't wedding films be more moving, entertaining, arresting and involving? We pursued those questions - refining technique, defining approach and telling better stories... Much credit of course goes to the designers – EVERYWHERE WE SHOOT for putting this together. And putting up with me. The main box is a double gatefold. The inside left contains the disc format of the final video. The center slots contain additional disc copies. The inside right holds our premium USB key containing the data versions. All embedded within our mantra, our code of filmmaking. In one of the folds are representations of who I am and what I do – a curated gallery of material objects. They don’t define me as a person. They are merely products of my personality.Everything is contained in a sleeve....Show it off. Be proud. Many aspire. Very few acquire." -- www.jasonmagbanua.com/blog/

The End.

Acknowledgments:

So much love, talent, hard work, sacrifice, and generosity went into the entire Gatsby shoot. It all started with a simple email from Carlo Cecilio of ImagineNation that had a simple request: to collaborate on features for the blog.

Each and every person who contributed--from Amanda flying all the way from Boracay, to Mich de Guzman squeezing in the time to do illustrations in between layouts for her day job, to Teddy Manuel and Koni Esteban for crafting special pieces for the shoot, to Madge for incredibly styling, pulling out, and creating each and every look, to Ryan Madamba, Clayton, Jun Escario, Joey Samson, Maco Costudio for allowing us to shoot their masterpieces, to Jason taking out of his crazy schedule to do some poses (and allowing us to shoot in his fine office at that) --every person who was part of this honestly, didn't have to go through all the trouble. Yet everybody did. It makes us want to move forward and continue building this amazing community.

Prom - The Road to Rebelliousness

Let's interrupt the usual wedding programming for a little bit, shall we? Poveda's 2013 Junior Prom. When wedding giants like Jason Magbanua, For You Are Mine, Madge Lejano, and hosts like The Boys of the Boys Night Out are actually part of a prom--you know this is gonna be fun, right? :)

The best-dressed of the night went to Janna Lejano, Madge's daughter. With a rebellious black Veluz gown, with Madge's amazing makeup, and with Teddy Manuel's creations on the corsage, you know know that Janna's entire look was really poised to be a sensation. Pay attention girls--you want to look awesome? You want to look different? You want to innovate? Then look to wedding artists even if your event is not a wedding.

Lifted from Madge's Instagram

Ahhhh.....prom. Great times. I was super into prom. So much so that I was in two of my own school's prom, La Salle's Senior Ball, and get this--I even attended a prom in the States (and boy that was a culture shock!)

When you turn into a Junior, all of a sudden you can feel the excitement everywhere as early as the start of the school year because it's gonna be a prom year. Not everyone cares for it, but for those who did (like me!) - the preps was one-year-in-the-making. It was in my junior year that I started with my derma routine--WEEKLY for almost a  year 'till my face cleared of blemishes can you imagine? And my good friend Maita and I (and Maita now works for the House of Alexander McQueen in London and she worked on the Royal Wedding can you imagine?) would sketch prom pegs. Seventeen Magazine was our bible at that time. It was such a big deal. If you think about it, one of the reasons why it was such a big deal was because you were 16 or 17 and for the first time, you get to make your own decisions and it would be the first time you'd transition into 'rebelling' against what your mom would probably want for your prom.

Looking back, I probably got my rebellious streak started during prom. Going against the flow, I didn't even get a designer gown. I had a peg and had a gay guy make it for me for like 2,000 bucks and I won the "hit the beach award" because my gown stood out and looked like a beach gown (my, I was really destined to be a Bora bride, huh?). Prom eventually leads to a Debut of course (w/c for me was more like an ANTI-debut type of thing), then of course you'll have the Wedding. Some may find these things superficial but it can actually define you or mold you to to the kind of independent decisions you eventually make. What were you like during YOUR prom? How about taking inspiration from it for your wedding? Like a "do-over" or the better version of your prom? :)

Throwback Thursdays: Kaye + Rap

What was the VERY FIRST Jason Magbanua wedding video you ever laid eyes on? How did it move you? How did it make you feel? I can never forget the first one I ever watched--experienced might even be a better word. I am a lover of all things creative especially when it comes to Filipino talent and I absorb it like a sponge. Kaye + Rap's wedding video (and their 2008 wedding itself for that matter), is one of the most influential visual love stories that probably inspired and evolved the way I view personalized weddings today.

Our Onsite Video from Kaye P. on Vimeo.

Raw talent will always grow and improve through time--but raw talent is also fluid, natural, and innate. Jason paved and shaped the way videography is done not just locally but globally. That will always be his legacy be it from 'classic' videos he has done in the past and those that he is doing today.

And to one of the 'earliest' Rebellious Brides I know, this one is for you Kaye! :)

XOXO,
Kai

Throwback Thursdays

Call me sentimental but my favorite Jason Magbanua videos are not necessarily the new ones but those that I've watched when I was still single and 'un-engaged'. There's something about that time in your life when you'd watch during lunch break with officemates, gushing and drooling at his videos then hoping, praying, and dreaming that it would be you someday.

Here's one of my absolute favorites.Incidentally, check out the featured rebel bride here who donned a hot pink gown! To be rebellious in 2008--wow, that's pretty remarkable! Enjoy :)

Cynclaire and Raffy - Same Day Edit from Jason Magbanua on Vimeo.

Jason writes: "...somewere along the buzz came the drunken idea of the perfect cocktail". To view his complete write-up, CLICK HERE

Jason is a visionary. This video was in 2008--yet this particular style is just being done by others now. And that's what makes him the undisputed, most influential filmmakers in the industry not just locally but globally. So what's your favorite JM video? :)

Before Rebellious Brides, There Was Once A "Bora Hop"

Photos by MangoRed unless labeled otherwise
Prologue - It's Feb. 13, 2013 midnight-- 2 days before my second year wedding anniversary. I can't sleep--tossing and turning trying to remember if my own wedding has a feature in the blog. And since I couldn't get the question out of my head, I open my laptop and begin to search the keywords "Bora Hop" in Rebellious Brides. And I've realized, it's not here. Sure, I've mentioned it in several other topics but there's actually no dedicated feature whatsoever. And it dawned on me that I've been featuring other people's weddings when I haven't even shared mine.

The fact of the matter is, before Rebellious Brides, before The Wedding Agency, first and foremost there was once a "Bora Hop". A wedding almost two years ago that somehow started all this rebellious blogging and wedding conceptualizing in the first place. It came before the blog and that's why it hasn't been featured here yet.

The thing is, the "Bora Hop" has been featured everywhere else. So I'll try my best to make this different by sharing my old pegs, highlighting more on the rebellious thought processes, and mixing everything up with other wedding files that aren't necessarily from the official photos.

This feature marks the FIFTEENTH feature the wedding has had in 2 years (coincidentally, our anniversary is Feb. 15). So I think it's probably time to retire the "Bora Hop". And I'm making this count. Enjoy :)

The Proposal - Well there was none, making this wedding rebellious from start to finish. It was simply two adults, having a serious talk, realizing it was time to get married and it was now or never. That night after the talk, I texted Jason Magbanua asking for February 2011 available dates and he knew right there and then what it was all about. No questions asked. A true fan dork, he was actually the first to know.

Photo using my own Lumix (Not official photos)

The Engagement Earrings - "I don't want an engagement ring. I don't need one." This was the challenge I have somehow inadvertently imposed on my then fiancee. So rebellious as he was too, he worked around this and found a loophole. "Everyone else has an engagement ring. But you deserve something no one else has. So I got you a pair of engagement earrings", my fiancee said.

They are my twinkle stars. Secretly, I feel like I'm Jem from Jem and the Holograms when I wear them.

A Challenging Budget Means Challenging The Norms - I've wanted a Boracay wedding since 2002. Hence, even without knowing who my future groom was, I've already been computing and recomputing how much a Boracay wedding could possibly be worth. The calculations seemed to point to one direction---it could easily go up to a seven-figured budget. So I took a step backward. I realized that this is the amount it will take to have the "usual" templated Boracay wedding.

Photo using my own Lumix (Not official photos)

I looked at our own Bora trips for inspiration
So I closed my eyes and looked to how we were like as a couple. How have we come to enjoy Boracay? Our trip would never be complete without having breakfast in Real Coffee. Watching the beach for hours and hours in Station 1. Trying out a new spa discovery. Heading on over to The Tides' Sun Deck for Happy Hour. Dinner in True Food. Then partying the night away wherever the thumping music took us. And so I typed in my Excel Sheets the concept of the "Bora Hop" and presented it to my fiancee. I plugged in the initial calculations and immediately the budgets were cut by half. This was a wedding that was authentic to who we are and how we enjoyed the island. And it was within a reasonable budget.

Our Dream Team - Every couple has one, right? Here's a quick rundown of ours.

Jason Magbanua was a no-brainer. But I guess the most special part about it was the fact that I've had prior conversations with Jason about wanting to get married in Boracay with my then boyfriend even before I got engaged. "It will happen. 2011 will be your year,  I can feel it. Just text me when it happens, I'll block off my sched," Jason proclaimed. It was as if the wedding god has spoken and the stars would have to align.

Jason Magbanua - Photo by Arnold Camacho
RB Mica - Photo by Arnold Camacho

RB Mica was another no-brainer. She was not just a friend but someone I've already worked with from many, many, other shoot collaborations.

I knew she would be by my side, not just as the makeup artist but also as a friend.

Hindy Weber Tantoco was yet another no-brainer. She has been my ultimate fashion icon since way back in college. I've been such a longtime fan. From Rustan's U, to Culte Femme. In fact, when my fiancee proposed for me to be his girlfriend, I was wearing a Hindy/Culte Femme cocktail dress. And from girlfriend to wife, I was going to be in a Hindy creation. For me it was not about the latest "it" wedding gown designer. It was more of going back to my own personal style and fashion roots if you will.

Mango Ryan Dagooc photo by Arnold Camacho

For our photographer and coordinator, there were a lot of choices that cropped up. In the end, it really boiled down to which photographer and coordinator would be the perfect fit based on the concept that we were about to have. We were going to hop around several locations so inevitably we felt that MangoRed was the perfect fit for this crazy rebellious concept. And because we were about to take things to a different route, we knew we had to work with the Queen of Boracay, Amanda Tirol.

Vision Mood Board

All White w/ Pops of Color aka, Kate Spade meets Jack Spade. My fiancee and I gravitate towards the creativity behind Kate Spade and Jack Spade. The playful colors, the even more playful touches. But we also enjoy the natural, organic things Boracay had to offer. We didn't want to overdo anything. We still wanted everything to go back to the island. And so we decided with just going for all-white. But agreed that once in a while, some color can pop out. Simple with a twist.

Screenshot from our Jason Magbanua Wedding Video

The Unpopular Guest Count - It was because of the very essence of the wedding's concept, of all the moving around that we knew the guest count had to be intimate. That and the fact that we were on a tight budget. Plus the fact that my fiancee and I have agreed long ago that our wedding would only consist of immediate family and closest friends because we wanted the experience for each guest to be personalized. That we could easily have a party back in Manila anyway. It was probably the most unpopular decision of the wedding. But we were very honest and open about this to everybody else. And back in Manila, our post-wedding party would  separately be known as a fun night to remember.

Intimate Wedding. Dream Team. Boracay in its most organic, natural form. All White w/ Pops of Color. These were our main rebellious elements. And this is how it unfolded:

More Rebelliousness - There were other subtle non-traditional decisions for our wedding. They were all not meant to simply be different, mind you. Basically it was just who we were and it seemed like the most logical things to do:

1) Minimal use of flowers - because I loved flowers so much, I couldn't bare the thought of throwing them away. The wedding only had a total of eight bouquets for the entourage and that was it.

w/ my best "groom-of-honor"
2) My fiancee saw my gown prior to the wedding because he was with me through all my fittings. I was also with him the morning of the wedding - we had breakfast together and even had a detox spa treatment together. We only separated for about 4 hours to get ready. Hindy called him "the best groom-of-honor". He never left my side. Screw the pamahiins. This was love, support, and teamwork at its best. Here was the man I was going to marry, I figured he was the only other actual person feeling the same emotions and excitement as I had so he was the best wedding buddy ever.

3) I rode a trike because I wasn't the golf cart type of gal. Taking trikes is one of the many charms of being in Boracay. I just wanted to keep it real.

4) I literally "chilled" with my girls during my preps. No cameras, no videos, no family were allowed to fuss around me because I didn't want to feel stressed. I wanted to have my own "chill zone", I wanted a laidback vibe. Jason and MangoRed weren't too happy with this set-up but I think that it all worked out for the best.

A beauty shot of my matron-of-honor while I did my preps

I wanted the wedding to be about EVERYONE not just me. So not allowing them to shoot while I prepped allowed them to highlight guests, loved ones, and everything else that went on in the wedding and not just the bride.

The video became about the people & the place - Jason realized / Screenshots lifted from our Wedding Video

5) The ceremony was like 30 minutes tops, including pictorials. We did our vows from the heart. And that was it. It was very simple. Minimal use of props. Just a circular type of seating arrangement to make it more intimate. Boracay was the backdrop. We couldn't ask for more.  Putting any more frou frou didn't seem right.

Photo taken using my Lumix (not official photos)

6) No cake, no first dance, no program. Only speeches. It was so moving. We couldn't have asked for more. We asked Jason and Amanda Tirol to say a few words. We even asked the CHEF of True Food to say a few words. It was a night full of moving affirmations. It was the most priceless thing in the world.

7) No Prenup Shoot  - just a Wedding Documentary

I met my husband in Sidebar on October 23, 2007. It was just fitting to have our Post-Wedding Manila 'inuman' where it all began.

8) The Post-Wedding Party in Manila - And so as promised, we had a party with more guests back in Manila a week after the wedding wherein Jason unveiled his wedding video for everyone to see.

Epilogue: A marriage full of FUN - We will always go back to this best time of our lives. Looking back, I now realize why I love our wedding so much--it wasn't so much about it being so unusual or rebellious. It was the fact that it was more like a RETREAT rather than a wedding. It was like an open forum that really strengthened our relationships with the ones we loved. After our wedding, we've grown closer and closer with our friends and family. We've kept in touch with our dream team and still dream to have a "grand reunion" with them someday.

"Happy Earthy Home" Photo by my sister, Ella

My husband and I started this marriage with a wedding that was PURE FUN. And so far despite the many challenges thrown our way we have remained positive, grateful, happy, and contented.

Now, it's all about the good vibes. Every day is all about the good vibes. We couldn't ask for more.

But once in awhile, we could (or would) never be able to resist hosting anniversary parties (or weddings) just to have an excuse to be around friends.

The End.
