RB 2013 Forecast Report: CAPIZ

In our Rebellious Brides 2013 Fearless Forecast Feature, we said something about skipping the mason jars and the other foreign influences because we have our own local artful products that we can celebrate. One of which is the Capiz. 

The Philippines is naturally abundant with Capiz shells. Capiz makes for such an elegant design element for  weddings. The great part about it is that when combined with ingenuity and taste, it can definitely look modern--and in some instances, even whimsical. 

 Together with Carlo Cecilio of Imagine Nation, we went to Cravings Il Terrazo for inspiration to create this pseudo mood board (or maybe it should be called mood blog) for you. The way Cravings' in-house designer Tina Bonoan visualized this branch is the perfect living proof of just how Capiz can be very versatile.

The Rebellious Gossip Girl Weddings

Who here can admit that their guilty pleasure is watching Gossip Girl? I know I do. And I've watched the series from the first episode and down to the very last one.

The finale wraps up with two weddings. And although we already kinda knew that Blair & Chuck would get married for sure, it was a surprise that Serena and Lonely Boy did too. But it doesn't end there. Both queen bees donned rebellious gowns and had rebellious weddings to top it off and that was even more unexpected!

I love that Blair Waldorf ended up in a rebellious look. We both love the color blue and this would have been totally my choice too.

The best shocker though was when Serena and Dan got married intimately in a living room. Now THAT'S rebellious!

I'm sure gonna miss Gossip Girl.....

The Hunger Games Parody - A Rebellious Couple's Entrance

First of all guys, I can't believe this entry went directly to our spam folder. It was submitted by Rebellious Bride Nadelyn a couple of weeks back and this is the only time we've seen it! Lesson learned folks, this happens once in a while so if you have submissions you may want to re-send it especially if you haven't received a reply from us :)

But better late than never right? I AM IN LOOOOOVE WITH THIS COUPLE'S ENTRANCE!!! I am completely blown away by the meticulous production details courtesy of Sequence by Sequence!

Hi Rebellious Brides!  

I know you featured twice The Hunger Games as a wedding theme in your blog. So we just want to share with you our opening video before our grand entrance to the reception. It also became our engagement video. 



We just wanted to have a kick-ass video so that when we are old we can say to our kids, "oh astig si Mama and Daddy nyo oh!" So why did we choose to do a parody on Hunger Games? Well, we really don't have much specific things in common as a couple. He likes extreme sports, while I like dancing. He sees things half glass full, while I see it half glass empty. So fine we really can't find anything. 

Then when we had a meeting with our wedding host, Mallory Ferrer-Cosio, she showed us a video of her couple who did a trailer of Mr. and Mrs. Smith as their opening video for their wedding. Gyte really wanted to have a kick-ass video so we brainstormed on what movie we can recreate. The movie has to be known to most of our guests, big in production value, and can mix our different personalities well. 

Then I suggested The Hunger Games because it was an epic movie. And for someone who didn't read the book, I enjoyed the movie. And it just so happens that the title is The Hunger Games because Gyte and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to eat. To add a twist to the trailer production, we made a parody and made it The Hungry Games. So instead of fighting for our own life, we were actually fighting against each other to be the champion of the eating competition. All the tributes were training to be the champion in that eating competition. :) 

 Sequence by Sequence also changed the Mockingjay logo of The Hunger Games into something similar but with  fried chicken, spoon, and fork as the key items in the logo. Our friends and family members and Gyte's employees were our actors. The voice of President Snow was the voice of my father. 

Pre-production was hectic and crazy. We went to Divisoria to buy props. And the costume of the Tributes were black jackets with special "Tributes" signs. Our "actors" loved the jacket/gift. We had to also feed 50 people since a scene in the film called for it.

The Reaping demanded a big crowd of people. We shot the entire video from 8:30am to 7:30pm. It was very tiring physically too because we had to run again and again for the chasing scene, all while wearing the thick black jacket. (Gyte was sick after the shoot!) 

 When the video premiered at the wedding reception, our guests were very shocked, happy and amazed! We were peaking through the doors to watch the video and watch our guests' reaction. And we're happy they loved it! They even said that we can pass as real actors! Or could it have been their nice way of saying ang arte namin! Hahaha!

Heath's Personalized Proposal

"I've always found it interesting that I know you both, but from different times in my life - small world! I think what you guys are doing is awesome and I've been (secretly) following your blog for over a year now.

The good news is, I don't have to keep it a secret anymore because I'm getting married. Yay!

I just wanted to share Heath's proposal with you because I'm very proud of how he made it so personal and unforgettable. I was thinking this could be good inspiration for the boys - something out of the box, personalised, simple, sincere and super inexpensive.

Heath and I haven't been together for a very long time (1 year and 9 months now) but we've always been sure that we want a long future together. In fact, we've spoken about getting married and hypothetically discussed what we wanted that day to be like, so in a way we both knew that he was going to ask me eventually and I would say yes.

I guess this put more pressure on Heath to find a way to surprise me and make the proposal extra special and unforgettable.

And his perfectly personal proposal definitely swept me off my feet!

I was in Sydney for work for a couple of days and when I came home, this is what welcomed me:

First there was a note by the front door welcoming me home, asking me to leave my bags by the door, freshen up and get comfortable. He said that when I'm ready, I should meet him in the lounge room for his 'first exhibit'. (On a side note, Heath reads comics and likes to draw and I have always tried to bully him into putting up an exhibit, or selling his work but he would always refuse). Anyway, back to my story…

At this point, I knew exactly what was going to happen and I was starting to freak out. I remember thinking that it's a good thing that I had my nails done earlier that week but really bad timing that I was wearing lawn bowling clothes from the office event earlier that day. For some reason I didn't think of changing my clothes. Super aligaga na ako that I just wanted to find out what he had planned.

I walked to the lounge room door and screamed through it, "What's going on in there??? You're freaking me out!!!"

He opened the door and I saw he was wearing his suit and heard he was playing one of the Feist albums in the background. I SHOULD HAVE CHANGED MY CLOTHES!!! Too late now…

I walked in and on the wall I found 12 A2 sheets of paper stuck on it. As soon as I realised what it was, I started crying. He had drawn a comic of our story - how we met, how we got together and what it has been like since. It was obviously a condensed version but he captured the best details and moments that I was laughing and crying the entire time I was reading it. I think I must have read it 3x because I was too nervous to find out what was at the end of it. 

The last page on the wall read: and that is why, with no hesitation nor fear, the boy for the second time in his life, manned up and said four little words…

He turned me around to face the opposite wall, and then there it was. On the wall, another drawing of a big ring that said: will you marry me?

He said "Mahal kita" and gave me a box and got down on his knees. At this point I told him he's not begging me so he really shouldn't be on both knees, just one. Hahaha. And I said yes.

I could not have imagined a better proposal. He made it truly ours and no one else can have that kind of proposal. No fancy restaurants, no hot air balloons, no rings hidden in desserts. The moment was exactly about what mattered the most: US.

Hope you enjoyed my story. If it ends up on the site, I would be very happy. If not, I'm just as proud of Heath and the sincere thought and effort he put into making it one of the best surprises of my life.

How awesome is a wedding theme that revolves around awesomeness? That's right. This blog post will literally use that word a lot. So brace yourselves. 

For this month's Poptastic Bride on Rebellious Brides feature, we are taking inspiration from this awesome wedding theme coined by the awesome couple Jax & Michael called The 'BYOA'  (Bring-Your-Own-Awesome).

So let's start!

Cynthia of PB writes: Please meet the super cool duo. According to the lovely bride, she and Mike are a “fun loving couple of crazies”. Jax is an artist and Mike is project manager for a woodworking company. They found each other on “MySpace” of all places.  (Oh the internet, what a wonderful thing!) Three short years later as they sat on the side of a hill watching Ol’ Faithful erupt, Mike proposed. Their wedding theme? It was BYOA (Bring Your Own Awesome) filled with DIY/vintage loveliness/art  and of course awesome!

What is awesome to you? In the case of Jax & Michael, having an awesome wedding meant: taking their entourage to an amusement park for a fun photo session, the bride walking down the aisle to the tune of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing", serving burgers, giving away homemade jalapeno jellies, DIY napkins, and a whole lot of crazy.

Here are some tips on how to create your own BYOA wedding:

1. Opt for awesome eats - There's nothing wrong with getting a caterer but what if you are just hiring one because we've been boxed to hire one during weddings? What if you served your favorite awesome dishes instead? Quality over quantity! For a budget of P500 per head, you could mix and match dishes that you and your groom TRULY like. Here's an example of an awesome menu:

In my own imagination of a cool BYOA foodie menu, I'd go for: Crema di Zucca (Squash Soup) by Cibo (P185) +  Charlie's Fili Cheese Steak (P220) with an alternative of Shroom Sandwich (P250)  for vegetarian guests + Vanilla Sunshine by Cupcakes by Sonja (P55) = P460.00/head! That's soooo affordable compared to catered weddings where some guests even secretly complain about not liking the food. I can already smell your comments now---the oldies will complain about this unusual-so-not-classy-uncatered-menu or that this is such a hassle cuz you have to order from 3 sources. But the theme is "Bring-Your-Own-Awesome" so... 'nuff said! :)  

2.  Instant craftiness - not everyone has the time to DIY things. Sometimes, when you are not innately crafty it even becomes more expensive to buy materials when you are still on the "trial-and-error" stage. So why not buy into the whole crafty details by literally buying in Landmark? You want paper napkins just like how Jax & Michael had it? Landmark has printed polka dot paper napkins for only P40.00 per pack! 

I even got this chalkbaord organizer for P1,000 which you can use for your registration! No need to pay a crafter, you just have to buy it in Landmark and use it for your new home after the wedding!

3. Make time for a fun e-session PRIOR to the wedding - Jax & Michael did a quick detour and had a photo session in an amusement park prior to the wedding. We also did this for our second wedding where we had a brunch session with our friends at Cafe 1771. So why not do the same? Lest you think that you will run out of time or that it's not important, relaxing and having fun actually helps calm down the nerves! Sometimes we all get caught up in the crazy wedding preps that we forget to just take in the moment. MAKE time for this. If you make it an integral part of the wedding schedule, then you shouldn't run out of time.  And here's our suggestion on where to do it! Tentenenen!!! The very awesome.....Magnolia Flavor House! Woot! :)

4. An Enchanted Kingdom Wedding - One of the suggestions of RB Mica on how to have a BYOA wedding is to literally bring the wedding in Enchanted Kingdom. And why not? I researched on this very subject and found a 2009 Pat Dy EK Wedding! It's 3 years ago but I reckon this one definitely deserves a spot here in RB! :)

 5. Find your inner awesomeness - Finally, the best way to create this theme locally is to bring out your inner awesomeness. At the end of the day, it's all about what YOU find awesome without copying someone elses mojo. 

If this were our wedding we'd probably incorporate handcrafted beers & wines from Oregon, a whole lot of plants, organic products, calligraphy/graphic art, an afternoon BBQ, MangoRed, and an eclectic dress code that will not limit anyone. So how about you? What's your own awesome wedding story?
