A Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding - A Rebel Love, Captured

Melancholy. Reflective. Hopeful. But playful and imaginative as a child. Ian Cruz Films nailed it in this Rebellious Brides Tribute Video. We barely even gave directions. And THAT rebels, is why you hire a pro.
Ian's visual representation of Rebellious Brides made me go back to the time when RB Mica and I were writing to our would-be, future readers back in 2011.

Yes, this 4-part series was all about a concept shoot to show you pretty rebellious things and new ideas but if you go deeper than that, it is quite a reflection of how we've all collaborated to keep our little community alive--you as the reader, and us as its champion, and the talented wedding artists we support. All coming together as one passion group, with one twisted perspective on love and how to celebrate it meaningfully.
As we cap off our four-part Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding Special Series, we hope that we've inspired you to evaluate what's really important to you when it comes to the wedding, especially when you are on a challenging budget. A challenging budget is never about scrimping on the most timeless investments of a wedding which is photography and wedding video. A challenging budget for us means knowing how to be creative with what to splurge on and what NOT to add at all. Our special feature had an ACTUAL concept with real elements that balanced off the "nice-to-haves" with the essentials. But the result, as you can see, is beauty in the rebelry.
Never be afraid of intimate weddings. Never be afraid to explore new venues beyond hotels and reception venues (especially if you are just being bullied into it when in fact, you are worried about the budget). Scrimp as you can, but always remember that a certain level of taste is important so you still have to work with the best even with a tight budget. QUALITY over quantity. You don't need all the frou frou you are bombarded with, stop being a "wedding hoarder". Know your limits, learn the art of careful editing, and never lose sight of you and your fiancee's personalities. At the end of the day, a wedding is still about the vows and making your union official and that's what's important. Vows with a fun, after-party to celebrate your union. That's the peg.
We hope you enjoyed our latest shoot concept. And thank you for always supporting our blog. We can't thank you guys enough. We are so blessed to have you all--from Manila, to Ukraine, to UAE, to Canada, to the States, and even Russia, and the rest of the world.

A Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding - The One On Foodie, Food, Food!

There are a lot of ways to interpret a fall-themed wedding. It could be based on the turning of the leaves, corn mazes, hay rides, to name a few. But when A Dash of Jamie & Jacqs Floral Design Studio approached us for this collaboration shoot, we wanted to be unique in our own way of course! And that's why we thought of Thanksgiving--not just because we have been feeling very grateful right now (Back track HERE), but also because when you think of Fall, it immediately takes you to Thanksgiving and plus, the family-style food spread.
This wedding concept shoot therefore, brings back one of the main wedding elements that has been ironically overshadowed by reception styling -- the food itself. We've seen many, many wedding photos and catering portfolios a hundred times over--and don't you find it curious as to why there are very minimal food shots? You see everything else though, right? The huge floral arrangements, the overwhelmingly themed decors, the shabby chic dessert table--but no food in sight. And then when you do see the food, it's gotta be the fancy kind--fillet Mignon this, baked salmon that. However, guests secretly get hungry after and go for a burger (at the end of the day, guests, especially guys just want fuss-free and generously portioned food). READ ON! >>>
As this is a Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding, we specifically made sure to highlight the food--so much so that it is actually part of the actual table arrangement, and that it's part of the styling even down to the last bouquet. Jamie of A Dash of Jamie in collaboration with Jacqs Floral Design Studio, who created our wonderful table arrangements made sure of that. In fact, Jamie and Jacq refused to work on the tables unless the bountiful spread from Pumpkin Catering arrived on our set. They wanted to enhance and highlight the food and style around it--not to overpower it. What's more, they even added their own edible props to further highlight on food!
Together with Jacqs Floral Design Studio, A Dash of Jamie styled our table arrangements with edible props in the form of tarts, fruits, and pumpkins. These talented girls also made use of muted and organically unkempt materials--a dash of dried pine cones here, a dash of wooden boxes there, and it further highlighted that this Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding was really all about the food!
The reception kind that we like is family style. Thanksgiving style! It's a way to make everybody on the table mingle, and it's a way to make guests feel more comfortable without having to awkwardly line-up for the buffet table after the required photo op with the couple.
Pumpkin Catering went all out for this shoot! Before the shoot, they asked what cuisine we wanted to highlight but we eventually customized a menu that had a little bit of everything. It's Thanksgiving after all, and it's nice to have everybody's favorite dishes on the table!
Generously portioned, tasty food, fresh and healthy ingredients, affordable (wedding rates start at P350++), flexible minimum number of guests (as low as 30 pax for rebellious intimate weddings), and a re-focus on just simple good food in 6 different cuisines, Pumpkin Catering is really all about the good 'ol foodie food food! RB Mica's personal favorite is the Paella, while mine is the Southern Fried Chicken. We had a turkey customized for the shoot since it's a Thanksgiving theme and it is definitely one of the BEST and I mean SUPER DUPER BEST turkeys I have EVER HAD! It's sooo good that it's tasty even without gravy or ketchup!

Since the wedding is set in a house, we made use of the existing wooden tables found in the house itself and created two set-ups. One formal (perhaps for the oldies?) and one that's a little bit more informal (for fun friends!). One of the most awesome things about non-traditional venues such as this, is that it allows you so much more creative freedom! No corkage, no matchy matchy tables and chairs, and intimate nooks for guests. So as we always say here in RB, we will always forever be "anti-reception."

A Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding - The One On Rebellious Details and Ideas
There's so many things that RB Mica and I are so thankful for. The most major of which is the blog's million views in just two years of being launched. And because we are in such a grateful mood, when Jamie of A Dash of Jamie and Jacq of Jacqs Floral Design Studio approached us to collaborate on a Fall-inspired shoot, it made sense for us to tie the shoot concept together into a Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding Theme. Our lucky stars seemed to have aligned for this shoot because we managed to attract a lot of wedding talents who wanted to be part of this project! So what seemed to have been originally planned as a simple collaboration turned out to be a very, very special mega production of some sort haha! And you know why rebels? Sounds cheesy but all of this is FOR YOU GUYS.
This "thanksgiving feature" is our own way of thanking all of you for reading and accepting our point-of-view. This intricately mounted concept shoot is also our way of inspiring you and showing to you our commitment in firing up more rebellious ideas that you can make on your own. To make you feel confident that there are soooooo many other ways to celebrate your love other than what's been accepted by our society for the longest time. That there are meaningful weddings that can be done outside of the church and even if it's a civil ceremony. That there are thoughtful and beautiful ways to celebrate with loved ones even if it's actually done in your very own backyard. That there are tasteful ways to show your own personal style without trying to pretend to look like a virginal princess especially if you are not. That there are so many fun ideas that have yet to be explored other than mason jars. That there are simple, practical ways to create and spend for a wedding without sacrificing your personality and a little bit of taste and style. And last but the most important of all, to keep you motivated especially if the things we've just enumerated above have long been your secret wedding wishes and you just kept it to yourself because nobody seemed to have supported you 'till now.
So without belaboring it any further, we invite you to take in all the rebellious details and ideas from this Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding!
Idea #1 - Why not have your wedding in a house?
In this concept shoot, we took the wedding in an actual, lived-in, rustic house. It's actually funny how here in Manila, weddings are mostly done in the swankiest and grandest hotels and venues but in the other parts of the globe, other couples--including a-list personalities, are so keen on wanting to have intimate ceremonies right in their very own backyard. And why not? Having your wedding in the home where you or your fiancee grew up in gives a whole other dimension to the meaning of uniting two families. If you are also on a budget and want to be able to allocate your monies to photography & videography, then taking your wedding in a home will save you a whole lot more. What's even better is that houses, especially lived-in ones give you so much more depth and character in terms of styling.
For instance, in this shoot concept, event stylist Jamie of A Dash of Jamie was able to add more dimension to the props she brought herself by using the elements that were already found in the house---from dried pine cones, freshly picked seeds, and beautiful wooden tables and chairs from the house's own kitchen and dining areas are just some of the already existing items that added to the fall vibe of our theme.
Do you like the idea of having a homey venue but you don't want to do it in your own house? Try the "Malacanan of the North" in Ilocos, where former President Marcos & Imelda used to live. The palace is surprisingly simple but very elegant and romantic. And it also has a homey feel even if it's a mansion. And get this--you can rent it for as low as P8,000 ($200). Too far for you? Did you know that there are houses around the Metro that can be rented out? If you have friends that work for production companies, they would know the right places to do just that!
Idea #2 - Why not reinvent the invitation?
Can somebody tell us why invitations are so templated? Even down to what's written in it?!?! And does it really need to have sooooo many pages that enumerates the entire entourage?

These were the words that we placed in our one-pager mock invitation as penned by calligraphy artist, Alexis of Ink Scribbler.
When we conceptualized this Thanksgiving Wedding, we wanted everything to be cohesive, personal, and practical. First of all it only had a 1-pager announcement, a map, and an rsvp card.
Second of all, this is a "Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding" and so even to how the invitations were written had to set the tone for that. Since this is supposed to be fall-inspired, we gravitated towards the beautiful words by Jonathan Larson from the songs Seasons of Love and La Vie Boheme. A wedding is supposed to evoke feelings of celebration, family, friendship, relationships, moments, and love. If you must spend on invitations, you might as well make it as personal as you can--as if you are writing a personal note to your guests, and not some formal, impersonal announcement.
When it comes to invites, we are a bit sensitive on this because we feel that it is a waste of money and paper. But we do acknowledge the fact that the parents and the oldies are so touchy when it comes to invites. So why not have your layouts scanned, and send it out to majority of your guests then just have a few printed out just for the oldies and for you as a souvenir?
Idea #3 - Why not give away something useful?
It's amazing how some couples or parents still insist on giving useless gifts like figurines or narcissistic ones with a photo of the couple--yes maybe the oldies or your relatives will appreciate this but errr...that's just about it. Seriously, why not just give something edible or useful? You're spending on it, so might as well give something that will actually be consumed and not something that will just accumulate dirt in somebody's shelf (or worse, thrown away without you knowing it).
The awesome folks over at Dreality Souvenirs created customized bath & body giveaways for our Thanksgiving Backyard Wedding. Again, it became super cohesive with the theme because this was a home-based wedding and here we are supposedly giving away home items. Dreality created a slew of beautifully bottled colognes, bath gels, lotions, shampoo, etc. as our giveaways. They also made custom labels that said "Thanksgiving Wedding" "Love" "Live" "Rebellious Brides" on it. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
Idea #4 - Why not create fun floral fantasies?
When we were collaborating with Jacq of Jacqs Floral Design Studio for the flowers to be used in this concept shoot, she initially sent us very pretty flower pegs--and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it but we pushed her a little bit more to add "rebellious" elements. So she did. So never be afraid to explore fantastical ideas with your florists. Make it a collaboration as opposed to one-sided. At the same time, explore the possibility of using flowers, vegetables, and even fruits that are in season and in keeping with your theme. To create that free-spirited thanksgiving vibe that we were going for, Jacq made sure not to make the boutonnieres and bouquets too matchy matchy. Each piece also looked like a "feast"--after all, it's Thanksgiving!
Jacq advises this to future rebel brides: "There will always be people who will gossip, critic, spread negative comments about you and your choices. Ignore them. Know what you truly want and stick to it. It's your wedding, don't let anyone ruin it!"
Idea #5 - Why not ditch the obsession to be matchy, match?
Was there any rule in how we styled the entourage for this shoot? No. And why does it have to be? Where is this obsession to rule over your entourage and dictate their color palette, their style, and everything in between coming from? Why can't you just be nice enough and allow them to style themselves in the color that flatters their own skin, and in the cuts that flatter their own bodies? We'll leave it at that.
